• Poll result: What digital policies did Open Internet supporters vote for?

    Aug 23 2010, 6:04

In the days leading up to the election, EFA ran a poll for #OpenInternet supporters asking the question: What digital policies will your vote be supporting in Saturday’s Federal Election?  The poll defined the NBN as being Fibre to the Home (FTTH) as opposed to Fibre to the Node (FTTN)  or a wireless broadband network.

Unsurprisingly, 96% of voters said that they would be voting against Mandatory ISP Filtering/Censorship.  However what was surprising is the support for the NBN with a whopping 82% of the votes.  Although this is a very small sample, the combination of of NBN and #OpenInternet was clearly the crowd favorite with 78% of the votes.

With the Hung Parliament seeming more likely by the day, it will be fascinating to see what impact the new government will have on the NBN and Internet Censorship.  We will all wait and watch eagerly for the result.  One thing that is assured, regardless of the governments constituents, we all need to remain vigilant in the defense of our digital rights.

QUESTION: Do you think that the poll accurately reflects the result of all Open Internet supporters? (Please leave a comment below)

What people say they'll do, and what they do are often 2 different things. This http://twtpoll.com/85p20n suggests that people were not kidding.

    2. Peter Rocco ( Gumby) says:

Hell Yes, I'm a techo and this is the result I was hoping for. Orange all the way.

    3. Zach says:

As someone that works in the industry, I don't see much point in Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) when with a little tweaking and a lot less than the Labor governments proposed AU$43 Billion price tag, there is the possibility of delivering 100mbit DSL to homes, using the existing copper cables that run into peoples homes.

A Fibre-to-the-NODE is a cost effective way to get the speed people want now, and still allow expansion for the future.

    4. Ben says:

FTTH is imperative to replace the archaic system in place to allow multiple multimedia / services into the house via single pipeline.

Video Conferencing, Foxtel, internet, phone, home automation (smart power control remotely) and so many more potentials in the future.

All the focus on the price tag, can you put a current value of the failing system in the ground which is easily effected by water/storms and RMI ?

Band-aiding the current system is a costly pointless option. The FTTN NBN needed to be installed 10 years ago. Stopping it is moving one direction… backwards, quickly.

    5. ljraggy says:

with regards to zach….. You obviously DO NOT work in the industry. Every Tech Blogger i have read supports FTTP even Leo LaPorte. We need to be a leader in technology and not LAG behind the rest of the world.

how much will FTTP cost in 2020 100+ billion and as Technology advances all we will need to upgrade are the end to end points not the fiber. 100Gigabit fiber anyone?

If the filter is enabled i can see a big business in Gigabit VPN's in NZ.

    6. Greg says:

@ljraggy, Read more. From a technical standpoint, it's just a plain waste of money. For instance, all those things Ben mentioned can already be done. Oh, and just about home automation. Home automation systems use so little bandwidth it's not funny.

I think FTTC is certainly a more reasonable approach, if only to plan for the future. I think there will be a shift towards synchronous bandwidth requirements in the future, and I'm sure 100Mbit will be fast enough. If a customer thinks he/she needs fibre all the way, then I think he/she should be allowed to pay for it out of their own pocket.

In fact, I will go on to wager that due to spiraling costs, the NBN will eventually be rolled back to FTTC.

    7. Marc says:

@Greg and Zach – I cant wait to see how wrong you both will be. 99% of the tech community realises that we need it, and have needed it for ages. Just because *you* cant see the need for it, doesnt mean it wont be needed.

    13. Phil says:

Asking EFA supporters what digital policies they will vote for in the last federal election is like asking members of the Vatican if they will vote for God. Get real and implement an unbiased poll of the general population if EFA wants a true evaluation of what the public wants. Perhaps EFA is afraid to find out.
