Update: Saturday March 6 National Day of Action
Mar 4 2010, 2:18As we blogged yesterday, this coming Saturday 6 March is a National Day of Action against the Government’s impractical and costly policy of internet censorship.
The events organised for Saturday have been organised by some of the other organisations that are campaigning against the Government’s mandatory Internet filtering policy, including Block the Filter, Stop Internet Censorship and Stop the Filter. While Electronic Frontiers Australia is not responsible for the organisation of any of these events, if you would like to show your opposition to the Government’s policy and support for an Open Internet, we would encourage you to go along.
EFA was asked at the last minute to provide some resources to assist the organisers of the Block the Filter events in Sydney and Perth. Unfortunately we felt that we were unable to provide the level of support requested. While we appreciate the commitment and hard work of the organisers of these events, we were concerned about how successful these events would be given the last minute nature of the requests. EFA also has a longstanding policy not to organise or fund public events and protests.
As a non-profit organisation funded by membership fees and donations, EFA has also a very limited budget and needs to spend that money very strategically. Indeed, in the coming weeks we will be launching a fundraising drive so that we can continue our campaign against the filter.
We are aware that this means there is a chance that these events may not be able to go ahead. However, we hope the events may still be held in some adjusted form, or that some other organisation might be able to provide the necessary resources.
Finally, if you would like to support the campaign against the filter apart from attending an event on Saturday, find out what you can do on our Take Action page.
